Difficulty Easy, but uneven footing

Description  See the cactus collection in Peter’s yard and then go to near by Roadrunner park followed by a one mile walk along an arroyo at the edge of the Franklin Mountains.

Required:  Bring water,

Optional:  walking stick, Snacks, camera, sun hat, dress in layers.

Difficulty Moderate

Description This trail has beautiful scenery and a wide variety of local plants. It is an easy hike, but some places are steep with unstable footing.  Distance 2.7 miles.  Elevation change 500 ft.  This is a one way hike.  We meet at the end point and car pool to the start point. 

Required:  Bring at least 2 qts water, sturdy footgear, sun hat, dress in layers

Optional:  Snacks, camera

Difficulty: Easy Walking - We’ll walk 2+ miles on level terrain.

Tour Description:  This walking tour will introduce participants to the changes that have taken place in the river-valley environment over the past century and the changes that are taking place today at Rio Bosque Wetlands Park as a result of efforts to restore native ecosystems at the site.  We’ll discuss the history of the park, its purpose, its plant and animal communities, and how those communities are changing as restoration proceeds. Directions to Park: take I-10 east to the Americas Ave. (Loop 375) exit (Exit 34). Exit southwest towards the Zaragoza Bridge. At the first opportunity, get in the left-hand lane and take the onramp onto Loop 375. Take Loop 375 for 1.4 miles to the exit for Alameda Ave., Socorro Rd. and Pan American Dr. Exit to the frontage road and continue straight ahead, crossing both Alameda Ave. and Socorro Rd. At Pan American Dr., turn left. Drive 1.5 miles towards the water-treatment plant and you will reach a bridge over the Riverside Canal. Cross the bridge, turn left onto the levee road and proceed 1.2 miles to the parking area at the Wetland Trailhead.

 

 

NAME OF THE OPTIONAL TOUR : Desert Discovery 

WHERE TO MEET: Chihuhuan Desert Nature Park - Las Cruces, NM  

Directions to CDNP
Take I-10 west from El Paso Zoo into New Mexico
Take I-25 north (exit 144)
Take Highway 70 east (exit 6)
Go about 4 miles to Mesa Grande Dr
Exit at Mesa Grande Dr (there is a brown highway sign for Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park)
Stay in the left lane and make a U-turn under the highway to the frontage road heading west
Go 1/2 mile and make a right turn on Jornada Rd (Gas station on corner)
Go 6.4 miles straight north (After 2 miles it does turn into a dirt road)  Keep going!
Make left into Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park and follow road to parking lot
Time of travel - 1 hour 15 mins to 1 1/2 hour depending on construction on I-10

Difficulty: Desert Discovery Trail is easy to moderate -1.2 miles long.  It is not ADA and there is a gradual elevation increase on one part of the trail.  There are waterless, composting toilets for use.  Bring your own water - there is no running water at the Nature Park.

Description of Tour:
Take a guided walk on the Desert Discovery Trail with an Asombro Institute scientist. Look under a rock or through the binoculars and you never know what you may discover. Did native people ever use this area on the western side of the Jornada Basin? What is soil cement? Does creosote bush smell like rain or is it the other way around? What made those tracks, and what lives in that hole? As desert explorers, you will discover the answers to these questions and many others. Keep your senses keen and your brain inquisitive on this adventure. There is a Self-Guided Tour Booklet that you can use on the tour, which is available to purchase after the program for $3.

NAME OF THE OPTIONAL TOUR: Discover an Ecotone 

WHERE TO MEET: Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park, Mesilla, NM 

Directions:

 From Interstate 10 in El Paso:

Take I10 west to Exit 140 Avenida De Mesilla exit 

Take the Avenida de Mesilla Exit (Exit 140) south to Calle del Norte (first stoplight) in Mesilla. Turn right and drive 1.9 miles west until you cross the Rio Grande. Immediately after crossing the bridge, the entrance to the park is visible on the left. Travel time approximately 1 and 1/2 hrs. due to I-10 construction.

From Las Cruces:

Take Avenida de Mesilla (Highway 28) south to Calle del Norte (first stoplight) in Mesilla. Turn right and drive 1.9 miles west until you cross the Rio Grande. Immediately after crossing the bridge, the entrance to the park is visible on the left.

Difficulty: Easy, level ground, sandy in spots. Please bring water and wear appropriate clothing.  Binoculars will be provided. 

Description:

A one and a half hour nature hike, guided by a Ranger, will begin at the visitor center.  We will take the Resaca trail along the drain to the pond and observe wetland animals and plants.  The Ranger will offer much useful information along the way.  We’ll then return on the Upland trail while learning about animals and plants of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Cost: Park admission fee of $5.00 per vehicle is required - cash or personal check accepted. Tour is FREE.

TRAM RIDE -ONLY

Difficulty: None ( easy walking) 

Description: Start the Tour w/ a thrilling ride up to Ranger Peak. Then experience a scenic tour topside, describing the Flora , Fauna, Geology, Landmarks, & History of the Tramway ( Celebrating 50 Years ). 

Cost: $7.00 per adult or Group rate of $4.00 per adult (w/ 10 or more)

HIKE UP TO RANGER PEAK 

Name of Tour: Wyler Aerial Tramway State Park (Ranger Peak Hike)

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Hike 

Description: Start the hike up at our Dirrectisimo Trailhead across our Loop Trail &

to the topside Platform ( Celebrating 50 Years ). 

Cost: No Charge for Hiking just, Tram ride $4.00 per adult one-way

NAME OF THE OPTIONAL TOUR:  Franklin Mountains State Park - Sunset Hike

WHERE TO MEET:  Front Gate of the El Paso Zoo at 4:00 p.m., we need to be at Franklin Mountains State Park – Tom Mays Unit not later than 4:30 p.m.  I do not have any problems with participants going directly to Tom Mays Unit if they choose to, we just need to know at time of registration for the hike.

DIRECTIONS: From I-10 exit on Trans Mountain Road (Texas Loop 375) and drive East (towards the mountains) 3.3 miles.  From US-54 exit on Trans Mountain Road and drive West (towards the mountains) 7.3 miles.

TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?  Transportation is limited to only 10 out of town visitors, others can carpool with locals.  Maximum 25 people.

Time tour starts:  4:30 p.m.

Time tour ends:  6:00 p.m.

Difficulty:  Easy

Description:  Join State Park staff for short and easy hike at the piedmont of the Franklin Mountains to enjoy a beautiful Chihuahuan Desert sunset.  We will have an informal discussion on conservation topics in a very relaxed setting.  Do not forget your camera!
