Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition
Helping to protect our desert since 2004

Six years ago, the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition was formed to collaborate efforts among public educators, the public and CDEC in support of programs that enhance conservation and education of the Chihuahuan Desert.  Being that it is the largest desert in North America covering 394,446 square miles of which 32% are in New Mexico and Texas, right in our back yard. The El Paso/Las Cruces/Juarez metroplex community is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. As you know growth and development is a tremendous concern to the desert’s ecosystem; by bringing awareness and education to people hopefully will instill value into the importance of protecting the Chihuahuan Desert and its natural resources.

The goals of the organization include: serving as a resource of information about the Chihuahuan Desert, encouraging life long learning about the Chihuahuan Desert and improving the quality of life for all citizens of El Paso and the surrounding area.

Sign up to become a new CDEC member today!  Go to the Membership link on this website or contact Rick LoBello at rickllobello@cs.com or by calling 915-521-1881.

Discover:
Franklin
Mountains State Park

Created by an Act of the Texas State Legislature in 1979, the Franklin Mountains form a striking backdrop to the City of El Paso and constitute an area of statewide ecological and aesthetic significance. Making the mountains a park for the protection of their natural features and enjoyment of the public has long been a dream of farsighted El Paso residents, as well as conservationists across the state and nation. When, in the late 1970s, developers began carving roads into these, until then, almost pristine mountains, House Bill 867 was passed in 1979 by the Texas Legislature authorizing Texas Parks and Wildlife to acquire Franklin Mountains as a state park, thus protecting the area from further urban development. The intent of the Legislature was to provide lasting protection to the outstanding scenic, ecological and historic features of the
Franklin Mountains so that they could be enjoyed and appreciated by present and future generations. Parks and Wildlife acquired the
property in 1981; it was opened to the public in 1987 for limited use. The park is the largest urban park  in the nation at 24,247.56 acres, covering some 37 square miles, all within the city limits of El Paso.  Learn More
